Der Verkäufer wollte damals eine utopische Summe dafür haben und ich habe ihn ausgelacht und dann begann eine lange Diskussion. Er hat mir einen Bären von seinen vierzehn Kindern aufgebunden und ich habe ihm von meinen zehn Kindern erzählt. Er hat sich schlapp gelacht … Aber irgendwann hatten wir es geschafft und uns auf einen Preis geeinigt – mein Budget war wirklich nicht groß. Mein Gott, ich kann das Gefeilsche bis heute nicht leiden.

Am Flugplatz ging das Theater wieder los. Ich hatte ein bisschen zu viel eingekauft, wie alle anderen auch, und mein Gepäck hatte etwas Übergewicht. Damals wurde das längst nicht so streng gehandhabt wie heute. Dass ich mein Übergepäck zahlen sollte, hatte sich bei allen Reisenden hinter mir in zwei Sekunden rumgesprochen und die Schlange hinter mir war sofort leer.
Ich hatte mich dann an die Seite gestellt und begonnen, ein paar meiner Schätze auszupacken, als ein Steward der Airline kam und mich fragte, was ich mache. Er meinte, das bisschen Übergepäck sei nicht schlimm, nahm mich mit zum Business-Class-Check-in und hat mich durchgewunken. Das werde ich nie vergessen.
Das Gepäck ging dann noch unterwegs verloren und ein Teil kam niemals an, aber mein Buddha war da …

This little Buddha has a story, and I’d like to share it here today. I brought him back from Bali 22 years ago, and the seller simply wouldn’t stop bargaining. He was having the time of his life, while I wasn’t used to haggling at all. But I absolutely wanted this beautiful Buddha. He’s carved, covered with traditional Bali fabric, and of course also painted. It was love at first sight. Many friends have tried to talk me out of him, but when it comes to this friend, I stay firm.

Back then, the seller asked for a ridiculous price, and I laughed at him, which led to a long discussion. He told me tall tales about his fourteen children, and I told him about my ten. We both had a good laugh… In the end, we managed to settle on a price—though my budget really wasn’t big. My goodness, I still can’t stand bargaining to this day.

At the airport, the drama continued. Like everyone else, I had shopped a bit too much, and my luggage was overweight. Back then, it wasn’t enforced nearly as strictly as it is today. When it became clear that I would have to pay for excess baggage, the news spread down the line within seconds, and suddenly the queue behind me had completely vanished.
I stepped aside and started unpacking some of my treasures when a steward from the airline came over and asked what I was doing. He said a little excess baggage was no big deal, took me to the business-class check-in, and waved me through. I’ll never forget that.
The luggage was later lost in transit and some of it never showed up, but my Buddha arrived safely…
