Die Dachterrasse des El Fenn Hotels in Marrakesch (affiliate Link) ist mindestens genauso berühmt wie das Hotel an sich – und das völlig zu Recht. Das El Fenn Rooftop in Marrakesch erstreckt sich über 1.300 m² direkt gegenüber der Koutoubia Moschee und ist einer der schönsten Orte der Stadt. Man gelangt übrigens über eine Treppe vom wunderschönen Hotelshop aus nach oben – was allein schon ein kleines Erlebnis für sich ist.

Im Restaurantbereich wird morgens für Hotelgäste das Frühstück serviert – auf der Terrasse, mit Blick auf die Koutoubia Moschee. Kein schlechter Start in den Tag, um es mal vorsichtig auszudrücken. Zum Lunch und Abendessen ist das Restaurant auch für Nicht-Hotelgäste geöffnet, allerdings nur mit Reservierung. Die ist wirklich Pflicht – ohne hat man keine Chance auf einen Platz.

Das El Fenn Rooftop in Marrakesch zum Sundown

Die Rooftop Bar ist legendär, besonders zum Sundown. Der Blick auf die Koutoubia Moschee, den Atlas und über die Dächer der Stadt ist ein absoluter Traum. Die Bar öffnet täglich ab 12:30 Uhr, Last Admittance ist um 22:00 Uhr – und früh zum Sundown kommen lohnt sich, denn die Kapazität ist begrenzt.

Die Einrichtung ist durchgehend in Rot und Weiß gehalten, mit wunderschönen marokkanischen Fliesen – loungig, gemütlich und dabei absolut stilvoll. Es gibt bequeme Sofas und Daybed-Bereiche mit dicken Kissen, kleine Tischchen mit Hockern und natürlich Plätze direkt an der Bar. Für Hotelgäste gibt es zusätzlich einen abgesperrten Bereich mit Liegen, damit man auch wirklich entspannen kann. Wer Interior-Bücher liebt, kennt außerdem die berühmte Wand mit den marokkanischen Laternen – abends werden diese angezündet und das Bild ist einfach magisch.

Zwei Pools und hausgemachte Cocktails

Auf dem Rooftop gibt es zwei Pools – einen kleineren und einen etwas größeren, der zum Hotelgäste-Bereich gehört. Die Barkeeper servieren klassische Cocktails, haben aber auch eigene marokkanische Kreationen im Programm. Alle sehr köstlich. Außerdem gibt es leckere Snacks.

The rooftop terrace of El Fenn Hotel in Marrakech (affiliate link) is at least as famous as the hotel itself – and completely deservedly so. The El Fenn Rooftop in Marrakech stretches across 1,300 square metres directly opposite the Koutoubia Mosque and is one of the most beautiful spots in the city. You reach it via a staircase from the hotel’s beautiful shop – which is already a little experience in itself.

Restaurant with Views across the Rooftops

In the restaurant area, breakfast is served for hotel guests every morning – on the terrace, with a view of the Koutoubia Mosque. Not a bad start to the day, to put it mildly. For lunch and dinner, the restaurant is also open to non-hotel guests, but only with a reservation. And that really is non-negotiable – without one, you won’t get a table.

The El Fenn Rooftop in Marrakech at Sundown

The rooftop bar is legendary, especially at sundown. The view of the Koutoubia Mosque, the Atlas Mountains and across the rooftops of the city is an absolute dream. The bar opens daily from 12:30, last admittance is at 10pm – and arriving early for sundown is well worth it, as capacity is limited.

The décor is consistently red and white throughout, with beautiful Moroccan tiles – loungy, cosy and utterly stylish. There are comfortable sofas and daybed areas with thick cushions, small tables with stools and of course seats right at the bar. Hotel guests also have access to a reserved area with sun loungers, so you can properly switch off. And if you love interior design books, you’ll recognise the famous wall with the Moroccan lanterns – lit up in the evening, it’s simply magical.

Two Pools and House-made Cocktails

On the rooftop there are two pools – a smaller one and a slightly larger one in the area reserved for hotel guests. The bartenders serve classic cocktails but also have their own Moroccan creations on the menu. All absolutely delicious. And there are tasty snacks available too.

Das Riad El Fenn in Marrakesch (Affiliate link) ist vermutlich eins der berühmtesten Riads der Welt. Es wurde einst von Vanessa Branson gegründet – ja, die Schwester von Richard Branson – und hat Ende 2025 den Besitzer gewechselt. Den Charme hat es dabei offensichtlich behalten. Das El Fenn liegt direkt gegenüber der Koutoubia Moschee und verfügt inzwischen über 41 individuell gestaltete Zimmer und Suiten. Normalerweise grenzt es geradezu an ein Wunder, dort ein Zimmer zu ergattern – und das, obwohl es für ein Riad über ziemlich viele Zimmer verfügt. Trotzdem ist es buchungstechnisch regelmäßig ausgebucht. Was eigentlich alles sagt.

Ist Das Riad El Fenn in Marrakesch überbewertet oder zu Recht legendär?

Während unseres Aufenthalts wurde ich mehrfach gefragt, ob das Das Riad El Fenn in Marrakesch wirklich so toll ist wie sein Ruf. Ich will ehrlich sein: Ich habe zu dem Zeitpunkt gedacht, dass ich es für ein wenig überbewertet halte. Keine Frage, die Einrichtung ist wunderschön, alles ist mit hochwertigsten Materialien ausgestattet, und auch kein einziges Teil wirkt ein wenig abgewohnt. Die Mitarbeiter sind ausnahmslos freundlich beziehungsweise herzlich und trotz der Anzahl der Zimmer wirkt alles noch persönlich.

Am Ende der Reise bin ich aber zu einem anderen Schluss gekommen und glaube, dass es sehr ungerecht und geradezu vermessen wäre zu behaupten, dass es überbewertet ist. In einem Land wie Marokko diesen Standard in dieser Form der Perfektion aufrechtzuerhalten, ist vermutlich eine Meisterleistung. Überbewertet? Nein. Zu Recht legendär? Ja.

Drei Pools, ein Spa – und eine Kaffeemaschine auf dem Zimmer

Das Das Riad El Fenn in Marrakesch verfügt über drei Pools, die man 24 Stunden am Tag nutzen kann, sowie über einen Spa und eine 1.300 m² große Dachterrasse. Nachmittags gibt es außerdem eine kleine Teatime in einem der Innenhöfe – so britisch-marokkanisch-charmant, dass man es einfach erwähnen muss. Für ein Riad ist das schon außergewöhnlich.

Wer in dem Restaurant essen möchte, muss unbedingt reservieren, sonst hat man keine Chance auf einen Tisch. Für die Rooftop Bar braucht man offiziell keine Reservierung – aber früh da sein ist Pflicht. Die Kapazität ist begrenzt, und zum Sundown wird es eng. Ich habe selbst erlebt, wie Gäste weggeschickt wurden, weil schlicht kein Platz mehr war. Die Bar öffnet täglich ab 12:30 Uhr, Last Admittance ist um 22:00 Uhr. The Riad El Fenn in Marrakech (affiliate link) is probably one of the most famous riads in the world. It was founded by Vanessa Branson – yes, the sister of Richard Branson – and changed ownership at the end of 2025. Its charm, however, appears to have remained very much intact. The El Fenn is located directly opposite the Koutoubia Mosque and now has 41 individually styled rooms and suites. Normally it’s almost a miracle to get a room there – and that’s despite the fact that for a riad, it has quite a lot of them. Still, it’s regularly fully booked. Which really says it all.

Is the Riad El Fenn in Marrakech overrated or legendary for good reason?

During our stay I was asked several times whether the Riad El Fenn in Marrakech is really as great as its reputation. I want to be honest: at the time I thought it was perhaps a little overrated. No question, the décor is beautiful, everything is furnished with the finest materials, and not a single piece looks worn. The staff are without exception warm and friendly, and despite the number of rooms everything still feels personal.

By the end of the trip, however, I came to a different conclusion. To maintain this standard of perfection in a country like Morocco is nothing short of a masterpiece. Overrated? No. Legendary for good reason? Yes.

Three Pools, a Spa – and a Coffee Machine in the Room

The Riad El Fenn in Marrakech has three pools you can use around the clock, a spa and a 1,300 square metre rooftop terrace. In the afternoons there’s also a little teatime in one of the courtyards – so wonderfully British-Moroccan in its charm that it simply had to be mentioned. For a riad, this is already pretty extraordinary.

Restaurant, Rooftop Bar & the Shop

If you want to eat at the restaurant, you absolutely have to book – without a reservation you simply won’t get a table. For the rooftop bar, no reservation is officially required – but arriving early is a must. Capacity is limited and it gets busy at sundown. I witnessed guests being turned away myself – not because they hadn’t booked, but simply because there was no space left. The bar opens daily from 12:30, last admittance is at 10pm. And something many people don’t even know about: El Fenn also has a beautiful shop. Ceramics, textiles, accessories – the kind of place where your travel budget disappears very efficiently. Speaking from experience.
