Wer in der Lavendelzeit im Luberon unterwegs ist, kommt kaum am berühmten Kloster „Abbaye de Sénanque“ vorbei, das unweit von Gordes liegt. Umgeben von weiten Lavendelfeldern ist es eines der bekanntesten Postkartenmotive der Provence.
Das Zisterzienserkloster wurde im 12. Jahrhundert gegründet und wird bis heute von Mönchen bewohnt, die ein einfaches, zurückgezogenes Leben führen. Besucher können Teile des Klosters besichtigen und so einen Eindruck von der schlichten Architektur und der besonderen Atmosphäre gewinnen. Besonders beeindruckend ist die Stille, die dort herrscht – sie bildet einen spannenden Kontrast zu dem regen Treiben der Touristen draußen auf den Lavendelfeldern.
Die Lavendelfelder rund um die Abbaye de Sénanque werden auch heute noch bewirtschaftet. Der Lavendel wird in den Sommermonaten geerntet und zu hochwertigen ätherischen Ölen, Seifen und kleinen Duftkissen verarbeitet. Diese Produkte findet man in den Klosterläden und auf den Märkten der Region – ein Stück Provence zum Mitnehmen, das nicht nur wunderbar duftet, sondern auch an die Reise erinnert.
Die schönste Zeit, um die Abbaye de Sénanque zu besuchen, ist im Juli. Dann stehen die Lavendelfelder rund um das Kloster in voller Blüte und tauchen die gesamte Landschaft in ein sattes Violett. Je nach Wetter beginnt die Blüte manchmal schon Ende Juni und dauert bis Ende Juli, bevor die Ernte beginnt. Anfang bis Mitte Juli ist der Anblick jedoch besonders spektakulär – ein Bild, das man so schnell nicht wieder vergisst.

If you’re traveling in the Luberon during lavender season, it’s almost impossible to miss the famous “Abbaye de Sénanque,” located just outside Gordes. Surrounded by sweeping lavender fields, it is one of the most iconic postcard motifs of Provence.
The Cistercian abbey was founded in the 12th century and is still home to monks today, who live a simple, withdrawn life. Visitors can tour parts of the abbey and get a sense of its understated architecture and the unique atmosphere. The silence inside is particularly striking – a fascinating contrast to the busy flow of tourists outside in the lavender fields.
The lavender fields around the Abbaye de Sénanque are still cultivated to this day. During the summer months, the lavender is harvested and turned into high-quality essential oils, soaps, and little sachets. You’ll find these products in the abbey shops and at local markets – a piece of Provence to take home, fragrant and full of memories.
The best time to visit the Abbaye de Sénanque is in July, when the fields are in full bloom and the landscape glows in deep violet. Depending on the weather, the lavender season sometimes begins in late June and lasts until the end of July, before the harvest starts. But early to mid-July is the most spectacular – a sight you’ll never forget.
