TARIFA & THE RIAD TARIFA

Tarifa hat mein Herz erobert. Wie könnte es auch anders sein. Von Tarifa bis Marokko sind es mit dem Boot nur etwa 17 Kilometer, und dieser Umstand hat den Ort natürlich geprägt. Der marokkanische Einschlag ist unverkennbar und lässt sich nicht leugnen. Überall begegnet man ihm. So haben wir in Tarifa sogar in einem wunderschönen Hotel namens The Riad Tarifa gewohnt.
Aber auch die Surfer haben Tarifa geprägt, denn der Ort ist ein echtes Kite- und Windsurf-Paradies.
Es gibt dort alles, was das Surfer-Hipster-Herz braucht: lässige Beachbars, Restaurants, kleine Stores wie Tarifa Soul und natürlich auch genug Auswahl für alle, die gerne vegan essen.

Da man mit der Fähre von Tarifa wirklich schnell in Marokko ist, kann man dort auch die verrücktesten Wohnmobile und Wüsten-Trucks bewundern. Und wenn ihr Lust auf einen Tagestrip nach Marokko habt, solltet ihr unbedingt euren Reisepass mitnehmen, denn mit den Schnellfähren sind Tagesausflüge nach Tanger möglich. Aber wirklich nur mit Reisepass!

Und als wäre das noch nicht genug: In Tarifa kann man auch Wale beobachten. Whale Watching ist dort grundsätzlich das ganze Jahr über möglich, die beste Zeit für Wale und Orcas in Tarifa ist aber ungefähr zwischen Mai und September. Mit etwas Glück kann man verschiedene Walarten und natürlich auch Delfine sehen. Als wir dort waren, hat es allerdings geregnet und das Meer sah nicht besonders einladend aus. Ich wäre auf kein Boot gestiegen. Mein Vater ist früher zur See gefahren, aber ich gebe zu: In diesem Punkt komme ich wohl eher nicht nach ihm. Mein Magen ist bei Geschaukel nicht besonders experimentierfreudig 🤢.

The Riad Tarifa

Gewohnt haben wir in dem wunderschönen Hotel The Riad Tarifa, das ich euch unbedingt ans Herz legen möchte. Natürlich ist es kein echtes Riad wie in Marokko, aber es ist im marokkanischen Stil eingerichtet und passt dadurch wunderbar zu Tarifa. Überall findet man schöne marokkanische Deko, lauschige Ecken mit dicken Kissen, Poufs und kleine Details, die einen fast ein bisschen nach Klein-Marokko versetzen. Das Hotel ist wirklich wunderschön und sehr stimmungsvoll eingerichtet. The Riad Tarifa hat außerdem ein Spa und im Sommer auch eine Dachterrasse, die während unseres Besuchs wegen Regen leider geschlossen war.
Gefrühstückt haben wir nicht im Hotel, weil wir ein kleines Frühstückslokal namens Helena’s Kitchen entdeckt hatten, wo wir unbedingt noch ein zweites Mal hinwollten. Es war so gut.

Tarifa has conquered my heart. How could it be otherwise. From Tarifa to Morocco it is only about 17 kilometers by boat, and this fact has naturally shaped the town. The Moroccan influence is unmistakable and cannot be denied. You come across it everywhere. So in Tarifa, we even stayed in a beautiful hotel called The Riad Tarifa.
But the surfers have shaped Tarifa too, because the town is a real kite and windsurfing paradise.
There is everything a surfer hipster heart could wish for: relaxed beach bars, restaurants, little stores like Tarifa Soul and, of course, plenty of choice for anyone who likes to eat vegan.

Since the ferry from Tarifa takes you to Morocco very quickly, you can also admire the wildest motorhomes and desert trucks there. And if you feel like taking a day trip to Morocco, you should definitely take your passport with you, because the fast ferries make day trips to Tangier possible. But really only with a passport!

And as if that were not enough: you can also watch whales in Tarifa. Whale watching is generally possible there all year round, but the best time for whales and orcas in Tarifa is roughly between May and September. With a bit of luck, you can see different whale species and, of course, dolphins too. When we were there, however, it was raining and the sea did not look very inviting. I would not have gone on any boat. My father used to go to sea, but I admit: in that respect, I probably do not take after him. My stomach is not very adventurous when it comes to rocking 🤢.

The Riad Tarifa

We stayed in the beautiful hotel The Riad Tarifa, which I really want to recommend to you. Of course, it is not a real riad like in Morocco, but it is decorated in Moroccan style and therefore fits wonderfully with Tarifa. Everywhere you find beautiful Moroccan decor, cozy corners with thick cushions, poufs and little details that almost make you feel like you are in a little Morocco. The hotel is truly beautiful and very atmospheric. The Riad Tarifa also has a spa and, in summer, a rooftop terrace, which was unfortunately closed during our visit because of the rain.
We did not have breakfast at the hotel because we had discovered a small breakfast place called Helena’s Kitchen, where we definitely wanted to go a second time. It was so good.
